Board of Education Meeting January 20 and next steps

Board of Education meeting 01/20/10 — situation critical

The budget report at this meeting was short and dire.  Because of various features of the governor’s newest budget, the district is losing an estimated $10.1 million dollars and must cut another $3.6 million. The district will consider taking more adult education money to meet its financial obligations, and the Board of Education will consider the district’s proposed actions at the next Board of Education meeting on February 10

Sheri Gamba, Associate Superintendent for Business Services, who usually gives the budget report in a very matter-of-fact way, was visibly frustrated, and said that when she goes to Sacramento for trainings, they always have seminars about how to “Do More with Less”.  Last time she was there, she said, the name of the seminar was “Do with Less”.

We are living in extraordinary times.

The main feature of the January 20 meeting was a huge turn out by students, parents and teachers at Portola Middle School. The school is seismically unsafe, and the kids, parents and teachers demanded that the school be relocated to portables on another part of the school property, so that the kids and teachers would not be dispersed to other schools.  The board reconsidered its previous decision in the light of this strong public support for keeping the school together.  Members of the board commented that it is necessary to consider community when making decisions, that the Portola community had a right to stay together and had a right to exist.

We hope they apply the same principals to our adult education community.

We need to be at the February 10 Board of  Education meeting in big numbers .

Next Steps:

  • Next COSAS meetings:  Tuesday, January 26 from 2:00 to 4:00 pm and Friday, January 29 from 11:00 am to 3:30 pm (bring lunch) . Both meetings will be held at Serra Adult School, 6028 Ralston Ave., Richmond.  Both meetings will be devoted to planning for the Save Adult Education Summit on January 30.

  • Save Adult Education Summit, January 30, 9:00 am – 12:00 noon Easter Hill United Methodist Church      Attend this event if you can.  Invite people who might be interested, especially your students.  We will plan for the February 10 Board of   Education meeting and beyond.  Adult education is a vital service. How can we save it?
