Communities Organized to Support Adult School (COSAS) Meeting Notes 09/17/20

Communities Organized to Support Adult School (COSAS)

Meeting Notes

School Board Candidates’ Forum 06/24:  There will be a candidates forum for candidates running for the West Contra Costa Board of Education on Monday, September 24 from 6:30 to 8:00 pm at the Harding Theater, 7230 Fairmont Ave., El Cerrito.  It would be good if some COSAS members could go.  Questions for the candidates can be submitted in advance to 4westcounty@gmail.com.   There will also be cards so people can submit questions at the event.

Proposition 30:  Proposition 30 is Governor Jerry Brown’s tax measure. CATESOL, the professional organization for teacherof English as a Second Language in California, recently came out in support of Proposition 30; their position statement is available at http://www.www.catesol.org/2012-Prop30-ppaper.pdf .  COSAS members read and discussed the position paper as part of the discussion as to whether to support Proposition 30 as a group.  The group voted to support Proposition 30 with one abstention.

COSAS to Partner with CCISCO:  Claudia Jimenez of Contra Costa Interfaith Supporting Community Organizing (CCISCO) made a presentation about a civic engagement  campaign in support of Proposition 30  which CCISCO is beginning now. The campaign includes  phone banking every Monday through Thursday night from 6:00 to 9:00 pm and precinct walking on Saturdays.  Claudia Jimenez of CCISCO made a presentation about the civic engagement campaign, and COSAS agreed to partner with CCISCO in this campaign. COSAS members who can do so should commit to at least two nights of phone banking.   COSAS will also partner with CCISCO and other organizations to put on a candidates’ forum for school board candidates on October 19.

For more information about the civic engagement campaign, see Claudia’s message below:

It was nice to meeting you and COSAS group on Monday. I want to know if you have the list of volunteers and what days they will be coming to do the phone banking.

We are at CCISCO office every week from Monday to Thursday from 6pm to 9pm making phone calls. Our goal is to have 10 volunteers every night to contact 29,000 voters and turn out 8,000 county wide.

Saturdays  starting this Saturday September 22nd until Nov. 3rd  doing the precinct mobilizations. On Saturday, we will be meeting at St Martks church and walk around the downtown area. We would like to see if one of these Saturdays is led by COSAS. The idea is to have 50 volunteers to do the precinct walks. We will do training every Saturday to the volunteers on how to do it.

We also want to organize in partnership with CLOUD and COSAS (Adult ED) a candidate forum on October 19th.

I am CC Carlos Martinez and Jose Juan Reyes our Democracy fellows who will be contacting the list of people that you will email to me. I would really appreciate if you can send me the list asap. Please let me know if you have any questions.

Sincerely,-

Claudia Jimenez
